Old Fashioned Apple Cobbler

Ingredients
  

  • 6 cups  peeled and sliced apples
  • 1/2 cup  granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon  lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon  ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon  ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
For the topping
  • 1 cup  all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup  granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons  baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon  salt
  • 6  tablespoons  unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup  milk
  • 1 teaspoon  vanilla extract
For serving
  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce, optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9-by-13-inch dish. Toss the apples with the sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Spread into the dish.
  2. Whisk together the topping flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla, stirring into a thick batter.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of the topping over the apples, covering most of the surface.
  4. Bake 40 to 45 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean, with the filling bubbling at the edges.
  5. Rest 10 to 15 minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce if desired

Notes

Store covered in the fridge up to 4 days, or freeze baked and cooled up to 2 months.
